The History of Speedos

When creative projects take on a life of their own

Some ideas are straightforward to execute. Others evolve as more people contribute to them.

Inspired by Richard Godwin's article Trunk Call: The Comeback of Skimpy Speedos published in The Guardian, this Australia Day passion project began as a simple idea: tell the surprisingly Australian story of one of the country's most recognisable cultural exports through animation.

What followed became a highly collaborative creative process spanning writing, art direction, illustration, storyboarding, animation, voice performance and sound design. Each contributor helped shape the finished piece while remaining grounded in a shared creative vision.

Sarah Schwab established the project's distinctive visual direction, which was brought to life through Caity Lee's illustrations and storyboards. After changes during production required the animation work to begin again, Damien Pannett ultimately animated the film from scratch, while Laneth Sffarlenn's voice performance and original sound design completed the final piece.

The project took considerably longer than originally planned to reach completion. Looking back, that's perhaps what makes it worth including here. Creative work rarely follows a perfectly straight line. Ideas evolve, collaborators change and projects sometimes take unexpected paths. The challenge isn't avoiding those moments. It's ensuring the original idea remains recognisable when the work is finally complete.

More than anything, The History of Speedos is a celebration of creative collaboration and the many disciplines that contribute to bringing a single idea to life.
